Notify us that you have become a parent
You can notify the Swedish Tax Agency that you have become a parent via our e-service “Digital confirmation of parenthood” (Digital föräldraskapsbekräftelse).
Use our e-service
If you are married to someone who has given birth to a child, you will automatically be confirmed as the child’s parent. If you are not married however, parenthood must be established. Parenthood can be established through digital confirmation of parenthood, the Social Welfare Board or a court judgement.
The easiest way to notify the Swedish Tax Agency that you have become a parent is via our e-service “Digital confirmation of parenthood”. This e-service can only be used to confirm parenthood for children born on or after 1 January 2022. You can notify us of your parenthood digitally up to 14 days after your child’s date of birth. The parent who gave birth to the child has to approve the parenthood notification provided by the other parent – via the e-service.
If more than 14 days have passed since your child was born, or if you do not use our e-service, you can confirm parenthood via your municipal Social Welfare Board instead. You can contact the Social Welfare Board directly if they have not already contacted you.
Using this e-service
You can use this e-service provided that all of the following requirements are met:
- Your child was born on or after 1 January 2022.
- Both parents were over 18 and listed in the Swedish Population Register when your child was born.
- Your child must be listed in the Swedish Population Register when you submit or confirm a notification of parenthood.
- Notification and confirmation of parenthood must be provided no later than 14 days after the birth of your child.
- You both have Swedish e-identification (this is required to sign using the e-service).
You cannot use this e-service if either of you has protected identity.

Notification of parenthood must be submitted and confirmed in time
The e-service “Digital confirmation of parenthood” can be used up to 14 days after a child’s birth. Please keep in mind that both the notification of parenthood and the confirmation must be provided within this time.
Joint or sole custody
When you confirm parenthood for you child via this e-service, you can also request joint custody at the same time. The Swedish Tax Agency can only grant joint custody if both parents request it and confirm the other parent’s request.
If you do not use this e-service
If you have not notified us of your child’s parenthood via this e-service 14 days after the child’s birth, the Swedish Tax Agency will inform the Social Welfare Board for the municipality where your child is registered as living, and state that details of the child’s other parent are not available.
You can also contact the Social Welfare Board (for the municipality where your child lives) directly to confirm parenthood.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no notification of parenthood for me to confirm?
If there is no notification of parenthood for you to confirm, it could be because:
- more than 14 days have passed since the child’s birth
- the other parent has not submitted a notification of parenthood
- you have already confirmed the notification of parenthood
What should I do if I do not want to confirm a notification of parenthood?
If you do not want to confirm a notification of parenthood, you can ignore it. If the notification of parenthood is not confirmed 14 days after the child’s birth, it is not possible to submit a new notification via our e-service.
The Swedish Tax Agency will then inform the Social Welfare Board (for the municipality where your child is registered as living) of the newly born child, and state that details of the child’s other parent are not available.
